BEHIND THE MUSICIAN

Oboist Maggie Ng strives to mediate the connection of people through her passion of music, and mission of sharing her music in a society where meaningful interactions are limited, and people find themselves increasingly isolated. She makes it a priority to bridge the gap between people of all backgrounds with her music.
Described by her audience as a captivating storyteller able to portray different characteristics in her performances” with her “sweet and elegant singing sound”, Maggie Ng is a musician to listen to.  


Growing up in Dallas, Texas, Maggie began learning the oboe in middle school and furthered her studies with a Bachelor’s Degree in oboe performance at the University of North Texas under the tutelage of Professor James Ryon. During her time in school, she won the highly coveted Presser Foundation Scholar Award in 2018. This award is presented annually to a student entering his or her senior year that has shown extraordinary musical and academic achievements, and is considered one of the most prestigious undergraduate awards in music at UNT. She is also an enthusiastic advocate of performing chamber music works, thus forming the Trioplet Trio in 2016, a reed trio, with her friends and colleagues, Sarah Seagraves on clarinet, and Caden Ridge on bassoon at UNT. They were awarded the winning Woodwind Chamber Music Award in the UNT Chamber Music Competition in 2017. She has premiered new chamber music as well.

Maggie graduated with her masters degree in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, studying with famed principal oboist of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Katherine Young Steele. She is currently pursuing a Performance Diploma at Southern Methodist University with Erin Tuomi Hannigan.


In addition to academics, Maggie is also an active performer and teacher. She held the position of second oboe/English horn in the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra from 2019-2021. Previously she has won a trial finalist position for second oboe/English horn in the Wisconsin Philharmonic and played with them in their 2018-2019 season. She has played as a guest principal oboist for the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra, Toccare Winds, Monroe Symphony Orchestra, and Rockwall Philharmonic. She has played as a guest second oboist/English horn with the Amarillo Symphony Orchedtra, Lone Star Wind Orchestra, and Lake County Symphony Orchestra. She maintains a studio of private students, ranging from beginners to advanced players. Most importantly, she continues to strive to learn more by constantly engaging with the musical community and further her education through events such as the prestigious le Domaine Forget, Eastern Music Festival, Hidden Valley Music Seminars with Elaine Douvas, and the John Mack Oboe Camp. She has studied with notable teachers such as Nathan Hughes.

Currently Maggie is furthering her skills in the arts through arts administration. This summer, she is working for Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, Califronia as their Artistic Program Coordinator and Artist Liasion.
